Our HAIR (Health Access Initiative for Recovery) Program

Professional barbers and hairstylists recognize that sitting in their chairs can be a therapeutic experience for their clients, offering them a safe space to share sensitive information and personal aspects of their lives related to health, family, and more. Recognizing the importance of these connections, Community Behavioral Health (CBH) invites barbers and hairstylists in the Philadelphia area to participate in a unique opportunity to uplift and empower our communities of color as part of the Health Access Initiative for Recovery (HAIR).

The HAIR program provides training to professional barbers and hairstylists on how to identify signs that may indicate a client has a behavioral health disorder, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or substance use disorder (SUD). This initiative is designed to meet people where they are most comfortable and direct them to available resources that can assist them with getting the help they may need.

This program is modeled after the Our HAIR program created by Community Care Behavioral Health (CCBH) in 2022 in Chester and Allegheny counties.

Upon completion of the program, barbers and hairstylists will receive:

  • Training from a licensed educator and hairstylist on how to support clients
  • Training on helping clients access behavioral health services in Philadelphia
  • A lifesaving overdose rescue kit
