Navigating Cognitive Processing Disorder as Providers: Skills, Strategies, and Scripts

This course will define Cognitive Processing Disorder (CPD) and its affiliated diagnoses and offer participants ways to identify its presence in clients/patients who do not have formal diagnoses.

From personal reflection and preparation of the provider to word choice and communication considerations, this training lays the groundwork for successful interventions for affected clients.
Participants will also be offered general “First Steps” re: how to share information, document, and engage with people living with this communication disability.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Recite the definition of Cognitive Processing disorder and identify at least 4 diagnoses with Cognitive Processing Impact
  • Relay how Cognitive Processing Disorder disrupts clinical efforts with patients and negatively impacts health outcomes.
  • Integrate at least 3 techniques for information sharing and support for clients with Cognitive Processing Disorders.

Laura Hinds is a Licensed Social Worker with over 20 years of experience as a Clinical Social Worker working with families impacted by HIV, as well as training, technical assistance and organizational development expertise.  She is faculty in the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work and the founder and principal partner of Hindsight Consulting Group, which provides training, growth and organizational development to non- and for-profit organizations in areas of customized curriculum development, training, group facilitation, program evaluation and leadership mentoring and coaching.
